It's a while since I recorded anything, but I got my last A2 exams (for January anyway) done today, so what better way to relax than to do a recording of the excellent VHII. I think this clip shows the characteristics of the pickup much better than all the other clips I did - this is a lot closer to what I hear coming out of my amp. Turn your speakers up to move some air, when the speakers are fairly loud the pickup shines through the mix more.

The reason the clip sounds so better is:

  • I've got a new tube mic preamp - much better quality than the built in BR1200CD one for only £30
  • The amp has better parts - Sozo caps and a Metroamp Dagnall clone OT
  • The 1960A cab has 2 G12M 'Greenback' reissues - one of which was recorded through the SM57 in the bottom right corner of the cab
  • I've got NOS preamp tubes in the Plexi (Slyvania and Valvo 12AX7's)
  • I've finally finished modding the circuit board. It's now 12000 series Marshall transitional spec but with quite a few mods of my own.
  • [/list:u]

I'm guessing this is something like how the theme goes, it's probably over a decade now since I actually watched Power Rangers  Laughing

You just don't get TV theme tunes like this any more....

i can't remember for the life of me how the power rangers theme sounded, but that clip was decidedly cool

now you have to try the transformers the movie theme tune, or thundercats, obviously...

Great sound and playing. Still, Power Rangers is the lamest show ever, IMHO.

What's next? Teletubbies?

Yup - that's the PPIMV on bedroom volumes, no power tube clipping whatsoever. Before I blamed the PPIMV for the poor qualities in my tone, as I had to crank the amp to get a good sound, but now that I've got NOS preamp tubes and the right speakers, caps and OT, the sound is great even when you can barely hear it! I've come to realise that power tube clipping was just covering the problem and not fixing it.

I've got a set of the new Sozo caps for a plexi...just need to finish off my 2203 Shredhead  (TM  Laughing   ) first then it's a 12XXX series to build....

Your amp is really sounding good now with those VH2s!

Awesome - you'll love that 12xxx series, my amp in this clip is very close to a 12xxx series. I've just tweaked a few things about that circuit to my liking, and added the switchable gain stage mod I designed so it can sound like an 80s hotrodded Marshall like the other clip I posted after this clip. I've got Sozo mustard+ in this amp right now, but I'm hoping to upgrade to the handmade ones once I get some spare cash.
